Understanding Menopause

Menopause is a normal event in the life of a woman. The average age is 51 but can occur much earlier and a few years later.

Common Symptoms of Menopause

The lowering of certain hormones in the body causes a variety of changes such as:

  • Hot flushes are sensations

  • Night sweats can disturb sleep

  • Genital changes. Lubricant may be needed.

  • Irregular periods, which can be lighter or heavier than normal

  • Urinary problems. Pelvic floor muscles can become weak

  • Skin and hair may become thinner

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Weight changes as metabolism tends to slow

  • Mood changes. Some women may become depressed, anxious, irritable, or even forgetful. This can happen through hormonal and emotional changes.

How Common Are Menopause Symptoms?

About 25% of all women have no problems, 50% have some symptoms (mild to moderate), and 25% have severe problems.
